A 'speccy' is merely a corruption of the word 'spectacular'. A 'speccy' is when a player reaches extraordinary heights in taking a mark (catching the ball). To an onlooker, it is nothing short of spectacular.

It can be a very fast flowing game. The fastest goal. From centre bounce to kick is just over 5 seconds. The 1970 Grand Final had a crowd of just over 121,000. 1972 Grand Final had 50 goals scored between the two sides. Not many games are lost after kicking 22 goals. I was lucky enough to be out on the ground with the banner for the 2017 & 2019 Grand Finals. Feeling the the roar of the crowd as a physical thing is unforgettable.

I'm interested to hear what exactly makes so many people say it's like "Rugby". Is it that they are not wearing equipment? Is it because they are running and tackling? Is it the shape of the ball? What they hell is it that makes it look like Rugby? One of the best things about footy is that is doesn't favour specific body types as much as other sports. It's not just about being the biggest or the strongest, or having wealthy parents. When it's wet an slippery, being small and fast with a low centre of gravity gives you an advantage. I think that gives it a lot of appeal for kids to get into. Low cost entry to the sport too, just need boots and a ball. It's an egalitarian sport, money and fancy equipment doesn't give anyone an edge over the competition. Some of the greatest to ever play the game, learnt it barefoot, because they couldn't afford shoes.

Baseball might have it beaten. Baseball first starting being played somewhere in the 1830s which predates footy by a couple decades.
There's actually mentions of baseball going back to around the 1780s but it does get kind of hard to differentiate what constitutes as a sport and just rudimentary games that it evolved from.
But a lot of our footy teams are older than any modern baseball team because a lot of those 1830s-1850s baseball teams either folded or never became professional.

@@suemoore984 SANFL dates back to 1877, as does the VFA that the VFL broke away from. But the oldest Australian Rules multi team competition was the Caledonian Cup that dates back to 1861, making the first true football "league" anywhere on earth.
There are individual team matchups going right back to village football, let alone Cambridge, Oxford, Eaton, Harrow, Winchester, Rubgy etc. You can argue those going back to almost a century before AFL. But organized leagues versus individual "challenges" are rare that early on. Even the big British football teams don't start until decades later. The FA Cup didn't start until a decade after the Caledonian Cup.

@@mikeythehat6693 There are three reasons I can think of that might make someone say Australian football is closer to rugby than the gridiron codes. First, the tackling style is more similar. Then there is the fact that there is much more in-play kicking in rugby than gridiron.

AFL was introduced as a way to keep the cricket players fit in the off-season (March - September) in 1858 and took inspiration from an indigenous game called Marn-grook, rules and a scoring system were added and the rest is history.
most AFL fields are played on cricket fields and can range from 140-185 Metres (148-202 Yards) in length and 110-155 Metres (120-170 Yards) wide.
The coloured lines are 50 Metres (54 Yards) is where most of the scoring kicks are taken, but the longest goal was 72.3 Mtres (237.2 Feet) by Bryce Gibbs in 2016.
Personally I think it is the best game in the world due to its high pace and physicality.
I support the Essendon Bombers (est 1873) they have won 16 premierships but none since 2000.
All teams in the AFL have a club culture, Rivals and history, no one club is better than the next and the salary cap makes it so every club has its ups and downs.
Great reaction and look forward to seeing more

Total attendance for the 2024 AFL season was 8,234,908 for 215 games, that's an average of 38,344 fans per game; some can be as low as 15,000 or as high as 75,000, depending on which teams are playing. The average NFL crowd size in 2024 was 69,555, an increase of 0.45%. Super Bowl attracts 70,000 plus on average. AFL Grand Final attracts between 80,000 and 100,000 plus.

These players are supreme athletes and outrun most in other ball games including the American ones. This game was inspired by a game named 'marn grook' played by the Australian indigenous people whose history goes back many thousands of years. They are the oldest living culture in the world. Try to listen more and not interpret the game in American football terms because it is a totally different game. Fantastic sport. Hello from Western Australia, aka WA. We have a very long history of football in our state, as does our neighbouring State of South Australia, known as SA. Melbourne, which is said more like Melbin, Melb'n or Melbun depending on which area you are from, is the capital of Victoria (another state). Whilst the sport is played pretty well all around this big land of ours, some states like Queensland and New South Wales (of which Sydney is the capital) play a different code of footy, and that is Rugby They still have Aussie Rules teams, though. The reason for explaining this is that in the beginning, all States had their own league. Victorian League was the VFL, my states league was WAFL, etc. They only became the AFL, aka Australian Football League, in the 1980's when other interstate teams joined in the competition in Melbourne. However, players from my state did play in Victoria before the National League started.
There are currently 18 teams in the mens competition, but Tasmania is currently working on a plan to join the league.
    Enjoy your discovery.
PS I barrack for the blue and gold team, West Coast Eagles. Whilst the last few years have been tough to watch, we have won 4 premierships since joining the league in 1987. That's the thing, if you are devoted, then you'd follow them, win or lose, and I do. 💙💛💙💛

best teams on popularity right now are West Coast Eagles, Richmond Tigers and Collingwood Magpies. Best teams based off of performance is Brisbane Lions(Won the AFL version of the Superbowl) Sydney Swans and Geelong Cats. If you want some game recommendations for pure AFL Greatness I can recommend the 2018, 2005, 2006, 2012 and 2023 Grand Finals. There's also the 2024 Preliminary Final between Brisbane and Geelong. Some of the best games of modern AFL you can see.

The game is played on a cricket pitch, hence the oval. The size dwarfs soccer and NFL fields. Players are supremely fit they run around 10 miles per game. Some retired AFL players beyond their fitness peak, go and play as punters in the NFL and college football in the US, not the other way around, though my team Collingwood poached a college basketball player for the team, he is Mason Cox.

If the ball gets touched by anyone after a kick at goal its 1 point. If the ball gets touched by anyone from a field kick it voids a mark and umpire yells touch ball play on.Nearly everyone is manned up on opposition players in their position so there's a lot of push and shove before the game and positions reset after a goal .(umpire bounces the ball from centre again).Cannot touch opposition players in the back or anywhere above the shoulders while umpire is watching. If the ball is kicked in flight above a pack of players you can run up the back of players to atempt a mark but you must atleast touch the in coming ball .Very hard game to learn .Must love running.the pros make it look very easy

The bouncing every 15 metres is an approximation since there's no way to accurately measure. Umpires literally just eyeball it. 15 metres is around 12-13 running strides for the average player but umpires won't penalize a player unless it's blatantly obvious he's run too far. Most players just bounce every 5-6 strides just to be on the safe side.

So sorry Gridiron is so boring. 95% of gridiron is nothing but the ref talking and the huddle. gameplay goes for 5-8 seconds at a time and when you add up only playtime, this game only goes for 22 minutes. the same amount of time just one-quarter of AFL is played for. Gridiron goes fr 4-5 hours but only has 22 minutes of gameplay. Basketball goes for longer and harder.

It evolved from Irish Gaelic football, which uses a round ball, no tackling and slightly different disposal methods. Because the games are similar there are occasionally mixed rules tournaments between Australia and Ireland, but they are no regualr and can be heated as the Irish are not used to getting tackled things can get ugly prety easily. Irish Gaelic players are often drafted by Autralian rules teams though as they generally have really impressive skills.

Lot of AFL $ goes into Kids programs esp Indiginous areas.
The community teams are huge outside City people travel hours to play game helps keep isolated people connected.
The major clubs do lot of outreach programs, even play 1 game in Alice Springs e each year people travel 100s km from BUSH to watch game.

Don't you just love it when someone chimes in and get the facts wrong. Gridiron was first played in 1869, between two college teams, thats a 101 years before 1970. The AFL was not created off Gaelic Football. As many others in the comments have stated. It is based of the Aboriginals game and was started as a way for cricketers to stay fit in the off season and pre dates any other codified sport.
