- Dan takes a closer look at the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Technodrome Playset from 1990 in this Retro Showcase.
Sure it looks like a golf ball on wheels and the scale from the show is all out of whack but it does have 2 of the most important things in any playset: a jail and a trap door.
So join us, won't you, for this trip back to 1990 and a look at the Technodrome.

I still got mine :) I'm from Germany and in Spring 1990 I was on vacation in Florida with my parents. Not only did they manage to secretly buy the Technodrome w/o me noticing, they also managed to keep it hidden at home until Christmas. I was a very happy boy that Christmas :)
Man, I LOVED my Technodrome. I especially liked how you could connect it to the sewers too... I had that too!
One of my absolute favorite playsets when I was a kid. Still have mine safely packed away until I have the space to display it. Great video as always!
Thanks!
One of the few 'big' toys I ever had. Still have it! Still love it!
I had that technodrome playset. Loved how you could connect it to the sewer lair playset by way of tubes that came with the sewer lair, thus expanding the play area.
3 Dons the Undercover turtle. My favorite of all the TMNT figures ever. :D
I still have one. complete. Love it
This is a pretty cool toy. I just bought one of these things intending to restore it for my toy collection. Managed to get the eyeball for 30 bucks. Probably a lot but I’ll never find another one loose
Excellent use of the Wilhelm scream.
That last line of people not taking care of their toys is so true. I don't consider buying stuff off those people as gettting a figure I want; I consider it a charity act of saving a good toy from a bad owner who won't respect it.
Got this for Christmas as a kid...that's pretty much all I can remember from that day because I'm sure I spent the majority of it in a Technodrome-induced shock.
I still have it though, and that damn eyeball still falls off if you hiccup within 2 feet of it.
At 1:28 i like how he was listed off the things of the thechnodorne and i made a cardboard version of this in August
My childhood technodrome is still here on display. Though its not complete. But I have the eyeball. And Every now and then I find a few accesories in a box. As I recall from the time this was a $49.99 retail item in 1990.
Han's "Wilhelm Scream" surprised me
I always thought they did a better job with the sewer play-set, but as an adult collector, I wouldn't mind a grey technoball sitting on my shelf.
The sewer set actually connected to the technodrome jail
I did not have one. But I saw it in a store once, and pictured how awesome it would be to own it.
i found a complete one for a good prize... but shipping it down here would be murder!
i had one when i was a kid, and loved it. had the turtles sewer too...
a tradition down here is that at some point your parents would gather all your old toys and just give em away to "los niños pobres" (the poor kids) and while i can get behind the alturistic reasoning behind that... i hate that i lost several awesome playsets and toys that way, now that im an old man collecting old toys.
sigh.
That Michael Knight just won't quit.
He literally sleeps around.
You are damn right, I was excited to unwrap this on Christmas morning. I simply loved this thing growing up and luckily I bought one MISB back in 2005 right before the nostalgia boom occurred, turning this 49.99 SRP in 1990-2005 to 200-1500 that it commands to this day. Will I sell it? Good lord man, are you high?!!
Interesting thing about this playset. The Technodrome was originally announced with the first wave of figures in 1988, and early promotional materials from Playmates had concept art of it, but lack of retailer interest in anything that large put this one on the back burner. Also, had it been released as originally intended, we would have been treated to a tank vehicle with a detachable inflatable balloon you fashioned on the top with vinyl plugs, just like the Turtle Blimp. For fans it would have been a release of the technorover vehicle that was seen in the pilot mini series, but that may have cost us a true release of the Double Decker Mobile Fortress.
I'm not surprised retailers weren't interested in taking a risk that early. No way they could have known it would be so huge (TMNT I mean).
Oh yeah, not to mention Playmates probably didn't have the money to even make a prototype of the monstrosity, considering they didn't market the 1988 Party Wagon which they had a working prototype with pull down front end (escape hatch) in promo materials as well that looked ready to go.
i owned the technodrone, only toy I ever got bought for me at the times square toys r us
I never had one but I always wanted one because not only it's a Ninja Turtles Toy but I never really owned a Playset before of any kind, of course Family Cheap.
Always wanted one!
I never knew about that this. Awesome 🤙🏽
Hey, a GI Joe board game cameo! I never learned to play the game, but that game board became my go to playset for any action figures when they needed to battle outside.
Also, Looks like you Boba Fett collection needs to look out!
Love this video, Dan!
Thanks for the kind words.
Classic toy an really cool looking as well, blast to the past on a retro cool toy.
I never had the 1990's Technodrome, but I have picked up the Mega Bloks Technodrome not to long ago and been working on getting it together.
What can I say, can't find the first one then might as well go for the brick version.
Just wish Lego had done some more TMNT set's before Mega Bloks got the rights to them back, but that's just me on that.
I wonder how a Lego Technodrome or TCRI build might look?
Mrbandit81 ...i have this technodrome and its a must have for my display. I also have thr megabloks one but have yet to build it.
if you lose the giant eyeball on top, is it protocol to attempt to attach an eye patch in it's place?
As much as I'd dig this for my toy display, it just wouldn't display like my Sewer playset does. Awesome for those with the real estate though. Great review.
Yeah it's definitely a weird thing to put on a shelf. Lots of point things poking out of it whether it's open or closed.
That was a rad review, dude. I'm totally telling all about it to my friends at the arcade.
Thanks! Wait... there's still an arcade somewhere?
There are a few left in Brazil. lol #cometobrazil
Great video, I’d love to see more like it
We have this! My son is loving getting all of his Daddy’s toys from his childhood. Has all the pieces too!!! And lots more!!! Tempted to tell my hubby to sell it to make money...if even has the eye! Looked up the video to figure out where all the pieces go! Thanks for the video!
I got this for my 10th birthday, between my brother and I we had a fairly extensive range of TMNT toys. They are all still at my mothers place and get bought out every time the grandkids come around. There’s a couple of things you forgot to mention such as the pedestal for krang (who didn’t come with the set) the bed has an “ooze” dispenser above it that worked with the playmate ooze (also sold seperate) and the tunnel from the prison was so you could connect it to the turtles lair set. Awesome video though, will you be doing more of the TMNT toys?
We'll definitely do more TMNT over time, yes.
Awesome! We also had the “mutant module” drill, the 2 different “turtle blimps” (one with hooks the other with bombs), the pizza thrower tank (which got re-released years later in different paint for the movie “Chicken Run”) the turtles party wagon and the foot cruiser.
The only Technodrome I ever had was the massive Mega Bloks version. It was bigger than the Playmates one and in better scale with its 2-inch figures.
Playmates turtles are the best turtles.
Real turtles aren't bad.
I got mine for my birthday! I have absolutely no idea what happened to it. It must have burrowed back down into the earth or teleported itself to dimension x. But it did leave behind a solitaire foot stand that was used to prop up one of the dome halves. Some say it walks to earth to this day. But they're wrong. It's in a bin in my parents garage. A last vestige as proof that I was once the cool kid on my block. And that's why no one ever wanted to play with me.
I wish the rules of what made you cool didn't change as you got older.
Toy Galaxy you and me both, man. You and me both.
To be fair it's totally in scale with the NES TMNT game Technodrome almost final battle boss.
one day I will get lucky and get this big ball
I still have mine and the sewer set that connected to it
Good video great toy
I had one.
That beautiful Undercover Don. Subtle nod to a fellow collector or happy coinsidence?
I don't think it was very subtle.
Toy Galaxy I didn't know you loved me so~~~.
Prices are holding steady, I just got one mostly complete only missing the eye and some small parts for 70 bucks....the eye cost me 40. So far the pricey thing is the red escape door cover, a red piece of flat round plastic with pizza grooves....60 bucks for that tiny piece of plastic. Altogether I estimate a $250 dollar investment. Will look great across from my original turtle van/party wagon with each vehicle flanked by their heroes and baddies.
Why do you have a yellow light bulb in the back? And what other lights do you use in the videos?
The lamp is just for ambience. And to put a little more light on the back wall. If you look at our earlier videos it's VERY dark. Looks like we're shooting in a cave sometimes.
1:59 Is that 1990 TMNT Leonardo, or TMNT 2 The Secret of the Ooze Leonardo?
It's the Walmart Exclusive TMNT 2. ruclips.net/video/AKBYzmlHYIU/видео.html
Hey Dan! Do you think a tour of your collection room would be a good idea? I would like to see that. 👍
No but only because I don't have a collection room. I mean, there's the shelves in the background... but that's about it.
Okay maybe a tour of that shelf in the future..
Have you checked out this video yet? ruclips.net/video/K-wPc7LNXqU/видео.html
Thanks for the link. I enjoyed the video very much. Keep up the good work.
I want one of these to customize into the Monster Mind base from Wheeled Warriors
Wow, they really pumped out those Trenchcoat Detective Donatello figures, didn't they? I had one too. I hated the stupid variations they would come out with. Why did we need a Detective Donatello or a Baseball Player Raphael? We need that as much as neon yellow Batman figures. Figures in the 90's were so frustrating because all you wanted were superhero figures that looked the way the characters did in the movies or comics only to have things like Nightclub Glowstick Batman shoved upon us over and over.
Michael Knight...TMNT/KNIGHT RIDER CROSSOVER CONFIRMED!
2 people have given this a thumbs down
i hate 2 people.
im buying a tee shirt, in red. lush!
From my understanding there are folks that just do the thumbs down regardless. Even if they actually DO like it. Also from my understanding, they both (up and down) have the same impact as far as RUclips's algorithms are concerned.
Infinite Likes! This was one of the few thing I never got my hands on from that line.
I wonder how the mini mutants look in the technodrome
I remember buying this, cost a fortene here. The eye was supposed to come of and Roll down the ramp iirc. Couldnt this be hooked up to the turtles sewer lair?
I found the Technodrome quite underwhelming as a child.
cowabunga dude. that was totally awesome and radical.
Thanks! We we're going for tubular, but I'll take totally awesome and radical!
Toy Galaxy dang, missed one. 3/4th of TMNT tropes is decent.
I have one
I was the odd kid, never got a Tnmt toy 😭...
that Christmas eve for me was glorious.... Santa (my great uncle) and yea spoiler alert about Santa kids........Santa has been my great uncle all these century's for everyone...... but that eve of Christmas Santa himself wheeled the chariot of awsome technodrome out of a bedroom pre stickered and assembled as if elves had slaved away, probably giving their lives so I......I COULD BE KING OF MEN AMONGST BOYS THAT CHRISTMAS....forever cemented me as a toy collector as if it hadn't been set in stone years before already.......AND THAT....IS THE STORY OF ME (walks into sunset)
bask in the glory of my fable
I am......
I felt the same way the year we got the GIJoe Hovercraft. It was doubly special because my older brother wasn't as into toys as I was. As soon as it was put together he was pretty much back onto watching sports.
Gnarly
Nobody likes this Drome like the other, better Drome.
